Employee Absenteeism

In 2005 the national average sickness absence per employee was 9.2 days costing UK industry £12 billion.

The average cost to an employer is £570 per day taken of sickness absence.

Absenteeism and the cost to industry is rising by 8.7% per year.

Many industries have now introduced wellbeing programmes, part of a whole range of employee support measures which improve the physical and psychological health of the workforce through counselling and practical measures such as therapy in the workplace.

  • The Metropolitan Police Authority has saved over £30 million since launching a £350,000 workplace health campaign in 2003. Absence levels have fallen from 10.2 days to 7.1 days per employee.
  • The launch of a health case management toolkit across its UK sites has helped GlaxoSmithKline reduce its absence rates. On some sites absence rates halved and on one site it made savings of around £1.5 million within a year.
